Joan has been in Minneapolis her entire life, having grown up in St. Louis Park, and then moving to Maple Grove over thirty years ago. She has been in the legal field since 1978, starting out as a court reporter, then as a paralegal, and after being widowed at the age of 29 with three toddlers, went back to school to obtain her law degree from William Mitchell College of Law. She graduated from law school in 1999. She is married to a PGA golf professional. And is blessed with three wonderful grown children, two grown step-children, three more grown children who she informally adopted when they were young (she acts as their substitute parent), and six grandchildren. She adores them all and strives to spend as much time as possible with them.
Joan taught paralegal studies for a number of years as an adjunct at Minnesota School of Business. She loves teaching and mentoring others. She has played in the bell choir of her church for over 25 years, plays in local card groups, and belongs to a book club. She also loves to travel, and has been to all 50 States, every province of Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, most of the Caribbean Islands, Ireland, Britain, Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Aegean Sea Islands, Switzerland, France, Monte Carlo, and Czechoslovakia. She and her husband also fly fish whenever they can.
Joan is heavily involved in her community and devotes a substantial amount of time to various professional organizations and her church. She also devotes time to pro bono work. She is passionate about helping people in any way that she can, and this sense of obligation comes through in everything she does.
